MATUBA PRESS RELEASE

Matuba wines are the proud title sponsors of an exciting, new-concept golfing tournament, which takes place for the first time on South African soil at the Simola Golf Estate on July 16th, 2006.

 

The tournament, to be known as the Matuba Open, is the first in which  handicap golfers will be able to compete for handsome cash prizes.

 

According to the rules of amateur golf, there are limitations on prizes that an ordinary amateur handicap-golfer may win, and only registered professional golfers are permitted to compete for big cash prizes.

 

Over the years, however, there has been a growing desire for golfers who do not wish to become professional players, to be able to compete in a professional-style tournament, which has given rise to the establishment overseas of the so-called “non-amateur code”. 

 

The South African Non-Amateur Golf Association (SANAG) has now been instituted, and it is under their auspices that this first tournament will be held in Knynsa.

 

“We are delighted to be involved in something as novel as this tournament” says Mr Stanley Henning, head of National Sales at Cape Coastal Vintners.  “We see the Matuba wine range as creative and innovative, particularly when it comes to the unique and elegant square bottle in which our flagship premium wines are packaged”.

 

Matuba premium wines are made from selected vineyards within a wide and diverse area in the coastal region of the Boland.  According to winemaker Koos Jordaan, the fact that the building blocks in the creation of Matuba premium wines come from a diverse area, is very beneficial.

 

“We have a unique situation in that we can combine the high concentration, bold, full-bodied wines from the Riebeek area, and the cooler, softer fruit flavours from the higher mountain-vineyards of Wellington, with the elegant, fruity wines from the Paarl district.  For a winemaker it’s wonderful to use these combinations in order to arrive at the finished product.”

 

The Matuba premium range of wines was released last year, and surprised the international wine market with the first square bottle in the world, for their Vineyards Specific flagship premium wines.

 

Further successes include sales to England and the Scandinavian countries, as well as an award at this year’s Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, at which the Matuba Premium Select Chardonnay 2004 garnered a silver medal.
